Worker presumed dead following silo collapse in Pennsylvania

Industrial workers' accidents are not uncommon in the United States, including here in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. A serious injury to an industrial worker may result in either temporary or permanent disability, or even death.

In an accident that occurred due to the collapse of a 125-foot silo containing concrete mix, a worker is believed to have been killed after being trapped under tons of steel and stony granules in Bristol. The silo is part of a complex of facilities being used to store materials, such as scrap steel, fertilizer, gypsum, salt, coal and grain, which are unloaded from ships that dock at an adjacent deep-water port.

The local fire department, which failed to find the worker after hours of combing through the debris with search dogs, presumed that the worker was dead and reclassified the rescue as a recovery effort. The Bristol Township Emergency Management director stated that the rescue operation will continue until the body is recovered.

Bristol Township police officials stated that the collapse was discovered by a patrol officer after noticing that the silo's lights were off and a snow-like powder hung in the air. Officials did not reveal the identity of the worker and stated that an investigation is underway to find the cause of the collapse. Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials said that the federal agency is also investigating the incident.

Permanent disability or death of an industrial worker in an industrial accident can impact a worker's family both emotionally and financially. An injured worker or his or her family has a legal right to seek compensation for medical expenses and lost wages. Since industrial accident compensation cases involve a lot of legalities, one may wish to seek the services of an attorney for better handling of the case.
