Workplace safety hazards that can cause an accident

Any workplace safety hazard is one that you (and other employees) should be fully aware of. By knowing where trouble could come into play, it's much easier to avoid a serious situation in which one or more worker suffers an injury.

With all this in mind, it's important to understand some of the most common workplace safety hazards. These include but are not limited to the following:

-- Working at height. This is commonplace in many industries, with workers using ladders and scaffolding to work at height. While this type of approach is required on many job sites, it's important that all people working at height use the proper safety equipment and follow all safety protocols.

-- A lack of organization. This may not sound like a big deal, but poor housekeeping can cause an on-the-job injury.

An example of this would be debris that is left on the ground, thus causing a trip hazard. This doesn't always lead to an accident, but it doesn't promote safety either.

-- The use of power tools. Commonplace on many job sites, power tools make life easier on workers. Unfortunately, this can also cause an accident. Only workers who know how to properly use these tools should do so. It's also important for these tools to receive proper maintenance.

-- Chemical exposure. Depending on the industry, workers may be exposed to chemicals from time to time. If this is the case, it's imperative that two things happen: The workers should know they are in close proximity to the chemical, and they should wear the necessary safety equipment.

With so many workplace safety hazards, it's easy to see why things can go wrong on a job site.

If you suffer an on-the-job injury, don't hesitate to receive medical attention. You should also make note of the cause, such as poor housekeeping or a defective tool.

Once you understand your injuries and know what type of treatment you require, you can then decide which steps to take next. If you are unable to return to work, you should file a claim for workers' compensation benefits. If you run into any issues, such as a denial, consult with an attorney who can review your case and help you formulate a strategy for moving forward.
