Are you familiar with hand tool safety?

When compared to power tools, it's easy to believe that hand tools are completely safe to use. While this is true if you know what you are doing, there are still times when accidents occur.

Here are some examples of how a hand tool could cause an injury:

  • When using a screwdriver as a chisel, the tip of the screwdriver could break off and strike you or a coworker
  • If a wooden handle is not in good condition, such as if it is splintered, it can lead to the head flying off and striking you or someone else
  • If impact tools are not properly maintained, striking the tool could cause sharp fragments to fly through the air

Since these types of hand tool risks exist, it's imperative that you wear the proper safety gear, such as goggles, at all times.

Unfortunately, even when wearing personal protective equipment, it's still possible that you could suffer an injury on the job. This often happens not when you're using a tool, but when you're in close proximity to another worker who is.

If you suffer any type of hand tool injury, stay where you are and administer first aid. In the event of a serious injury, call 911 to ensure immediate medical treatment.

In the event that your medical team suggests that you take time away from work, you will want to learn more about making a workers' compensation claim. If approved, you're able to receive compensation until you recover. It's this money that will help you get by during this difficult time.
