As fall approaches, heat safety remains important

Although summer is quickly winding down, it's important to remember that temperatures may remain high well into September. If you work outdoors, it is particularly important to keep close tabs on the weather at all times. This can be the difference between remaining safe and taking a risk with your health.

While many people prefer the heat over cold weather, it is important to remember that those sunny skies and warm temperatures can be dangerous. If you aren't careful of what you are doing, you could suffer a serious injury or illness.

Here are some of the many tips to follow to ensure you're always working safely in the heat:

  • Stay hydrated at all times. Don't wait until you are hot and worn down to start drinking fluids.
  • Wear protective clothing. In the summer months, this typically means loose-fitting (and light-colored) clothing that promotes airflow.
  • Don't overdo it. Even if you're the type of person who works hard at all times, you don't want to overdo it in the heat.
  • Take breaks as necessary. If you find yourself wearing down, find a cool place and sit down for a few minutes. This can go a long way in helping you cool off and re-energize.
  • Avoid direct sunlight. This is not always possible, but it's something you should try to do. Along the same lines, make sure you wear sunscreen when necessary.

If you suffer any type of injury on the job site, such as passing out as the result of heat exhaustion, you need to receive immediate medical attention. This is the only way to understand what went wrong and to receive the treatment necessary to feel better.

If your injury or illness will keep you out of work for an extended period of time, don't hesitate to file a claim for workers' compensation benefits. This can help you get by until you are able to return to your normal work schedule.
