Even a minor workplace injury can cause life changes

Residents of Pennsylvania are aware that every employer has a duty to ensure the safety of its workers from all known dangers. Though most workers believe their workplace is safe report, workplace accidents are not unheard of. Recently, for example, three people suffered injuries at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space museum in New York City.

According to sources, a transformer exploded on the grounds of the aircraft carrier-turned-museum, causing burn injuries to three people, including a volunteer and two museum employees. Two were transported to a hospital while one was treated at the scene. The three people were working at the end of a pier repairing a power supply when the accident occurred. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Even if not life threatening, a workplace injury may cause significant harm to a person. The worker's capabilities may be diminished and he or she may not be able to report to work. The person may also have to undergo medical treatment or surgery for the injuries, or require rehabilitation.

While undergoing treatment, it is advisable that an injured worker acquires a second opinion from the insurance company's doctor. The injured has a right to all medical treatment related to the injury, to choose a doctor after a specified number of days of treatment, and to be free from the nurse case manager. Injured workers also have a right to be paid workers' compensation if a claim is accepted, and the right to file a penalty petition if the insurer does not pay.
