Fewer workplace fatalities reported in 2012 in Pennsylvania

According to a report, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that workplace fatalities in Pennsylvania decreased in 2012 with only 163 fatalities were reported compared to 186 reported in 2011. This is a significant decline from the 354 workplace fatalities reported in 1994. The Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries Program stated that the number of workplace fatalities overall in United States has also decreased, stating that 4,693 fatalities were reported in 2011, as opposed to 4,383 recorded in 2012.

Most of the fatal workplace accidents were related to transportation incidents, followed by accidents involving contact with objects and equipment. These two categories accounted for 60 percent of fatalities, while slips, trips and falls, violence and injuries by humans or animals accounted for the remaining deaths. The report stated that although fatal accidents related to transportation incidents have declined since 2011, fatalities that resulted from contact with objects and equipment have been on the rise.

Most workplace deaths occurred in the construction industry. More than 20 fatalities were reported in the agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting industry sector, which had fewer work fatalities in 2011. The report shows that 30 people who were fatally injured in Pennsylvania were working as contractors.

Although there has been a decrease in workplace fatalities in Pennsylvania and throughout the country, more can be done to help prevent them. A workplace accident can lead to financial and emotional loss to the families who depend on the loved ones for support. They may have to face medical expenses, funeral costs, and loss of income due to the work accident. The family of the victim may pursue a claim to recover financial losses caused due to the accident.
