Repetitive motion disorders can result in permanent function loss

Repetitive motion disorders are more common than you might think. This group of muscular conditions result from motions that are repeated without interruption in someone's daily activities or while at work. Some of the most common RMDs include:

-- Carpal tunnel syndrome

-- Tendonitis

-- Bursitis

-- Tenosynovitis

-- Trigger finger

-- Ganglion cyst

-- Epicondylitis

These RMDs are most common in shoulders, wrists, elbows and hands; however, the symptoms can also appear in the back, neck, hips, legs, knees, ankles and feet. The main symptoms include:

-- Pain

-- Tingling

-- Swelling

-- Redness

-- Numbness

-- Strength and flexibility loss

There are treatments available to treat RMDs, such as taking frequent breaks and doing relaxation or stretching exercises. Ice can help reduce pain and swelling. Medications can do the same. In some cases, physical therapy or splints may be used to relieve the pain in the joints and muscles. In other cases, surgery may be required.

Most people that suffer from RMDs do recover completely. With changes in the way these individual do their jobs or daily activities, they can avoid re-injury. However, if treatment is not received, then the person may end up with a complete function loss and a permanent injury.

Repetitive motion disorders that occur on the job should be covered under workers' compensation. If your claim for benefits for RMDs was denied by workers' compensation, an attorney can help you file an appeal. You have a right to have your medical bills paid for and to have your wages reimbursed if your RMD was the result of work. You can learn more by visiting our webpages on this topic.
