Hand tool safety tips: Start with protective gear

Many people believe that power tools are the only ones that can cause injury. When they think about hand tools, they assume that these are 100 percent safe, no matter how they are used.

If you know anything about tools, however, you realize that this is not the case.

Construction workers, for example, use hand tools on a regular basis. While these can go a long way in completing any job in an efficient manner, improper use can cause serious injury.

To protect yourself, it's important that you wear the right protective gear at all times. This may seem like overkill at times, but you don't want to get into the habit of using dangerous tools without the right gear in place.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Wear goggles or safety glasses for eye protection. This can go a long way in protecting your eyes, such as when swinging a hammer or cutting a piece of wire.
  • Wear cut resistant gloves. Have you ever thought about the damage a misplaced blade could inflict on your body? Wearing stainless steel or Kevlar gloves is an absolute must.
  • Wear safety shoes. When choosing safety shoes, opt for a pair with reinforced toes. This can help protect your feet from injury in the event that you drop a tool. Traction is also important when choosing safety shoes.

It's easy to get into the habit of using hand tools before taking the proper precautions. You should never let this become a problem on the job site. Even if it seems like overkill, put on protective gear before you do anything. You'll be glad that you did if something goes wrong.

If you suffer any type of on the job injury, such as one as the result of using a hand tool, receive immediate medical attention. Also, let your employer know about the accident and your injury.

If your injury prohibits you from immediately returning to work, you may want to learn if you can file a workers' compensation claim.
