Protecting your eyes at work: Things to know

Depending on your profession, you may need to take steps to protect your eyes at all times.

Some of the occupations with a high risk of an eye injury include: construction, welding, plumbing, mining, electrical work and maintenance.

If you work in any of these fields, it goes without saying that you should wear the proper eye protection at all times. The type of protection you wear depends on many factors, including but not limited to:

  • If you are working around anything that could fly into the air and strike your eye
  • If you are working in close proximity to chemicals
  • If you are working near radiation

In addition to taking steps on your own, you should consult with your employer with respect to the eye safety requirements for your work environment. If you don't take the right steps every time you arrive at work, you could be putting your eyesight at risk.

Some of the many things employers can do to better protect workers include:

  • Reducing or removing any eye hazards when possible
  • Conducting an assessment to pinpoint hazards
  • Providing workers with eyewear

Any type of eye injury is one that can cause serious problems, such as temporary or permanent blindness. This is why you should never take a risk when it comes to protecting your eyes.

If you suffer an eye injury on the job, do these three things:

  • Call for immediate medical attention
  • Report the accident and injury to your employer
  • Receive medical treatment and learn more about long term care

If you are unable to return to work in the near future, you need to consider one additional step: filing a claim for workers' compensation benefits.

An approval means that you can begin to receive compensation in the near future, hopefully lasting until you are able to once again return to your job.

In the event of a denial, regardless of the reason, learn more about why this happened and the steps of the appeals process.
