A Pennsylvania Turnpike worker is struck, killed on the job

Pennsylvania State Police put out a statement on Tuesday, Oct. 10 acknowledging that a construction worker, who'd been working near the Kittatinny Tunnel early that morning, was struck and killed on the job.

Police noted that the 63-year-old Luzerne County resident had been operating a backhoe at around 4:15 a.m. when he decided to attempt to cross the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The backhoe's operator was apparently unable to fully clear the oncoming traffic traveling in the eastbound direction in time. The rear portion of the construction worker's heavy machinery was reportedly struck by a 21-year-old Jackson, New Jersey motorist before he could clear the roadway.

The impact of the crash reportedly was so strong that it caused the construction worker to be ejected form the backhoe operator's seat. He is believed to have succumbed to his injuries before emergency responders arrived at the crash scene.

As for the motorist who struck the backhoe, he reportedly had to be airlifted to the Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University for further treatment. His 20-year-old passenger was transported by ambulance to Geisinger Holy Spirit Hospital. Both are are described as having suffered relatively minor injuries in the crash.

The portion of the turnpike where the accident occurred remained closed for several hours as police reconstructed the crash and worked to clean it up. It's unclear if the 21-year-old New Jersey motorist will face any charges for his role in causing the construction worker's death.

If you yourself have been injured or lost a loved one in a workplace accident, then a Dauphin, Pennsylvania workers' compensation attorney may advise you to file an injury lawsuit in your respective case.
