The many types of construction personal protection equipment

If you work in the construction industry, you know that there is danger lurking around every corner. It only takes one mistake by you or another worker to lead to a serious injury or even death.

This is why you need to learn more about the many types of construction personal protection equipment that you can use to prevent injury in the event of an accident.

Here are a few types of construction personal protection equipment that may come in handy in your day-to-day work life:

  • Eye and face protection: safety glasses, goggles and welding helmet
  • Foot protection: slip resistant shoes, safety toed footwear
  • Hand protection: gloves, welding gloves, insulated gloves
  • Head protection: hard hat
  • Hearing protection: earplugs and/or earmuffs

As you can imagine, you don't have to use every type of construction personal protection equipment at all times.

For example, if you're not working around loud machinery, you don't have to worry about hearing protection. However, you may still need to wear a hardhat and goggles.

If your company doesn't provide you with the appropriate construction personal protection equipment, you can always purchase it yourself. You should talk to your supervisor about what you need in order to improve your safety.

Unfortunately, even if you wear construction personal protection equipment there is no guarantee that it will prevent every type of injury.

For instance, slip-resistant shoes are no guarantee you will never slip and fall or fall from a ladder.

If you suffer an on-the-job injury, don't hesitate to seek medical treatment. You also need to let your supervisor know what's going on, so that other workers can avoid a similar accident. This will work in your favor if you need to collect workers' compensation.

Once you receive treatment, your medical team will let you know if you can return to work. If you are unable to do so right away, it's time to learn more about your legal rights and whether you are eligible to receive workers' compensation benefits.
