Are you in the habit of following these ladder safety tips?

If using a ladder is part of your daily life at work, you need to remember one thing: An accident can happen at any time. This is why you need to be extremely careful at all times.

It doesn't matter if you're using a ladder indoors or out, here are a few tips that you should keep in mind:

  • Inspect the ladder before you take your first step
  • Make sure the ladder has slip-resistant pads
  • When setting a ladder, never place it on soft or unlevel ground
  • When climbing a ladder, always keep three points of contact
  • Never attempt to carry a heavy load up or down a ladder
  • When using a ladder to reach a dismount point, make sure it extends approximately three feet above the landing spot
  • Never stand on the top rung of a ladder
  • Don't make sudden movements, such as stretching or pulling, when on a ladder
  • Never set a ladder in a high-traffic area

These are not the only ladder safety tips you should be following, but they are definitely among the most important. With these guiding you, it's much easier to feel confident in your ability to remain safe at all times.

If you are part of a ladder accident at your place of employment, stop what you are doing and call for help. You should also report the incident to your supervisor, so that he or she has a clear idea of what happened.

If your fall results in serious injuries, you may not be able to return to work. This should lead you to file a claim for workers' compensation benefits.
