These workplace safety hazards are no joke

When it comes to workplace safety there is never a good time to let your guard down. Instead, you need to remain alert and on the ball at all times.

Unfortunately, regardless of your profession or industry, there is always a chance you could be part of a workplace accident. Even worse is the fact that this type of accident could result in serious injury or even death.

Here are some of the most common workplace safety hazards, any of which could cause you trouble at some point down the road:

  • Working at height. For example, if you find yourself working on a ladder, day after day, you need to be careful with every step you take and every move you make. A fall to the ground below is every bit as dangerous as it sounds.
  • Poor maintenance and housekeeping. Cluttered work areas can result in an accident. For example, debris that is left on an office floor can act as a trip hazard. The same holds true for a messy construction site or warehouse.
  • Electrical hazards. From extension cords to faulty switches, there are a variety of electrical safety hazards that can cause trouble at a place of employment.
  • Forklifts and other types of vehicles. Depending on your job responsibilities, you may find yourself using some type of vehicle throughout your day. Even if you aren't operating the vehicle, you may be in close proximity to someone who is.

As you become more familiar with common workplace safety hazards you'll find it easier to avoid trouble. Just the same, you should always realize that something could go wrong when you least expect it. Even if you don't make a mistake, another person could.

If you are part of a workplace accident, be sure to report it to your employer and receive immediate medical treatment.

If your medical team suggests time away from work, you'll want to file a workers' compensation claim. This will give you access to financial benefits as you recover, thus making your life a bit easier. Since a denial is possible, don't hesitate to learn more about the workers' compensation system and your legal rights as an employee.
