There are a number of factors that can cause an individual to experience symptoms of depression including a poor body image, illness, a lack of friends or family to rely on, financial difficulties or relationship concerns. There are factors in the workplace that can exacerbate those feelings, though, including having to work long hours or an unpredictable job schedule, lacking control or having a high stress role.
According to the National Institutes for Health, there are some professions that are more apt to leave their workers depressed more so than others.
Child care or nursing home workers
Those who work as personal care providers, whether in child care or as nursing home attendants, are the most apt to experience depression at almost 11 percent. To put this in perspective, seven percent of the general population and 13 percent of those who are unemployed experience depression.
The research shows those working in this profession often are responsible for handling pretty mundane tasks on a daily basis including caring for others or feeding and bathing them.
It also shows that both kids and nursing home residents are the two groups of that are unable to give thanks to those that care for them because they’re either too young or ill to be able to do so. This, coupled with having to care for people who are often sickly, often leaves them feeling unappreciated and stressed out.
Health care and social workers
Those who provide medical care to others, whether as physicians, mental health counselors, social workers or nurses often find themselves exhausted after working long hours helping to address others’ needs. The time that they spend helping others cope with different situations including trauma or sickness leaves them with very little energy to care for themselves.
Seeing some of these struggles their patients endure can leave them with a negative view of the world.
Other non-medical workers prone to depression
Individuals who work in other professions including as artists, salespeople, food service workers, teachers, accountants, administrative roles and in building maintenance are also prone to depression.
