Simple tips for sharing the road with commercial trucks

If you live in the state of Pennsylvania, there's a good chance you spend time on the many highways that crisscross the state. When you find yourself on the highway, it's imperative to do whatever you can to safely share the road with commercial trucks.

Driving in close proximity to tractor-trailers is easier said than done, but there are some basic tips you can follow to enhance your safety. Here are three tips to keep in mind at all times:

  • Keep a safe distance: There is never a good time to drive too closely to a commercial truck. If you drive a few feet behind a large vehicle, the driver may not be able to see you. The same holds true if you're right next to the truck. When you keep your distance, you'll feel better about your ability to remain safe.
  • Take caution when passing: Due to the size of their vehicles, truck drivers often have a difficult time maintaining their speed. Subsequently, there will be times when you want to pass a truck. When doing so, leave plenty of space before pulling in front of the truck. Also, if you're unable to pass safely, drop back for the time being and wait for a better time.
  • Watch for wide turns: Even though you're most likely to run into commercial trucks on the highway, this can happen in the city and other areas. Truckers often need to make wide turns in close quarters. If you're not careful, a trucker may not see you when setting up their turn, thus causing an accident.

As stressful as it can be to share the road with commercial trucks, following these tips can ease your mind just a bit.

If you're part of an accident with a tractor-trailer, here are some steps to take:

  • Move your vehicle out of traffic and to safety if possible
  • Call 911
  • Check yourself and your passengers for injuries
  • Treat any injuries until emergency help arrives at the scene
  • Accept ambulance transportation to a local hospital
  • Follow the guidance of your medical team
  • Review your insurance policy
  • Contact your insurance company to file a claim

If you do all these things, you'll feel better about what your future holds and your ability to hold the trucker responsible for causing the accident.
