Tips to help prevent electrical injuries at your workplace

Electrical injuries are every bit as serious as they sound. Not only can electrocution result in serious injury, but depending on the severity, it can also lead to death.

There are many tips you can follow to help prevent electrical injuries at your workplace:

  • Report any electrical hazards: In addition to reporting these hazards, let others know where they are so that they can keep their distance.
  • Inspect your equipment: When using any type of electrical equipment, inspect it for damage before plugging it in.
  • Be careful when cleaning electrical equipment: For example, if you attempt to clean an electrical tool with water while it's plugged in, your risk of electrocution is much greater.
  • Beware of your conditions: The equipment and power cords you use indoors will not be the same as the ones you use outdoors.
  • Never use faulty equipment: If a piece of equipment is hot, has a bad smell or is giving off small shocks, put it to the side for the time being. You can then have it inspected by a professional as time allows.

These are some things you can to do prevent electrical injuries at your workplace.

If you're electrocuted for any reason, you must receive immediate medical care on the scene and at a local hospital. This treatment can go a long way in helping you make a full recovery.

When possible, report the accident to your employer and learn more about your legal rights. An electrocution is likely to keep you out of work in the near future, so you'll want to learn more about filing a claim for workers' compensation benefits.
