Essential steps to take after a car accident

Any type of car accident, even one in which you don't suffer a serious injury, can bring massive amounts of stress to your life. This is especially true immediately after the accident occurs.

With so much happening, you may find yourself scrambling. You don't know what to do next. You don't know what's happening around you. And worse yet, you have concerns about your health and well-being.

This isn't a time to panic. Instead, it's a time to calm down and take a few key steps toward quickly improving your situation.

Here are five essential steps to take after any type of car accident:

  • Move to safety: For example, if you're part of a highway accident, move to the shoulder of the road. In the city, consider if you can move into a nearby parking lot or onto a curb. The key here is that you want to get out of harm's way.
  • Check yourself and your passengers for injuries: Don't assume anything. Closely check yourself for injuries, paying attention to any pain or discomfort you're experiencing. Also, don't forget that some injuries, such as brain trauma, don't always present symptoms right away.
  • Call 911: There's never a good time to skip this step. Even if you have things under control, it's a good idea to call 911 as the dispatcher can send an ambulance and police to the accident scene.
  • Document the accident: In addition to exchanging information, take photos of the scene and speak with witnesses. If you're unable to take this step as the result of serious injury, it's okay to skip it.
  • Contact your insurance company: Once you receive treatment and understand your prognosis, contact your insurance company. When filing a claim, don't feel the need to share too much information or answer questions you don't understand.

Knowing that you should take these steps should allow you to move quickly in the event of a motor vehicle accident.

Your health should take priority over everything else. Once you're stable, it's time to protect your legal rights. This means holding the negligent driver responsible and seeking compensation for your injuries and damages. You can learn more about your rights as a driver in an accident by visiting our website.
