Can a low back strain keep you off your feet?

Although a low back strain is not the most serious injury, it can cause a good amount of pain and discomfort. Furthermore, if you don't treat it immediately and in the appropriate manner, you run the risk of additional injury.

Some of the most common causes of a low back strain include:

  • Slip-and-fall accident
  • Physical exertion
  • Heavy lifting
  • Repeated bending

Even if you take steps to prevent injury, a low back strain has a way of sneaking up on you when you least expect it.

What does it feel like?

A low back strain is typically associated with the following:

  • Pain and discomfort, especially when you attempt to move
  • Stiffness in the lower back region
  • Pain that radiates into the legs and buttocks
  • Pain that worsens when stretching and bending

Keep in mind that many of these symptoms are also associated with other back injuries, including some that are more serious (such as a pinched nerve). This is why it's important to seek immediate medical treatment.

If you're diagnosed with a low back strain, your doctor will suggest treatment such as:

  • Ice and heat therapy
  • Bed rest (but not for too many consecutive hours)
  • Physical therapy

Depending on your profession, a low back strain may keep you away from work for an extended period of time. If you suffered your injury on the job, you should learn more about the workers' compensation system. You may be in a position to file a claim for benefits, which allows you to receive payments until you're able to return to your job.
