Do these things to prevent dehydration at work

Dehydration is a serious medical concern, as it can result in kidney failure, shock and extreme cramping among a variety of other side effects.

Depending on your profession, dehydration at work may be a major concern. For example, you're at risk if you perform physical labor outdoors during the hot summer months.

Fortunately, there are many ways to help prevent dehydration:

  • Drink plenty of water: Not only should you do this while you're working, but load up on water before your day begins. This puts you in a good spot from the first minute of your shift until the last.
  • Watch what you eat: Fill up on foods that contain a high amount of water, such as vegetables and fruits. This diet will help supplement your water intake.
  • Don't drink alcohol or beverages with caffeine: Many workers enjoy drinking coffee in the morning, but too much caffeine increases the risk of dehydration.
  • Take breaks in a cool place: By taking breaks throughout your day, you give your mind and body time to rest. This is also a great time to rehydrate, as doing so will give you more energy when you return to the job.

Even if you take these steps, you could still suffer from dehydration on the job. If you suspect dehydration, don't push through it. Stop what you're doing, drink plenty of water and call 911 for help if you think you need it.

If your medical team suggests that you avoid overexertion for the meantime, follow their orders to prevent complications. This may lead you to file a claim for workers' compensation benefits, as you'll want to receive financial assistance while you recover.
