Are dental injuries covered by workers' compensation?

When most people think about workplace injuries, they thought of cuts, bruises, broken bones and maybe even head injuries often come to mind. Very few individuals think about a worker's mouth getting hurt. These types of incidents are often quite painful. Employees suffer mouth injuries on the job more often than you may suspect is the case though.

Individuals who work in foodservice, agricultural roles, as mechanics or construction workers or in the health care or cleaning fields are particularly vulnerable to mouth injuries compared to those employed in other professions. Individuals who work in these industries are more apt to be being hit in their mouths or falling than others. Either one of these types of incidents can result in a worker cutting their tongue or lips or them suffering gum irritation or tooth loss.

Many workplace injury accidents that result in a worker hurting their mouth are unintentional. Individuals employed in these professions often end up with their mouths getting hurt when another worker drops an object on them or hits them with a door. These incidents often happen as a result of a worker being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Most workers who are asked what their employer's workers' compensation insurance covers mention catastrophic injuries such an employee's arm becoming mangled after being caught in malfunctioning machinery. Few workers realize that their employer's workers' comp coverage can be used to pay for dental injuries they suffer on the job.

The truth is that your employers' workers' compensation coverage may cover anything from an emergency dental office visit to teeth implant surgery if you've suffered severe dental injuries on the job. You should consult with a worker's compensation attorney in Dauphin if your Pennsylvania employer has told you that you're responsible for covering all the costs associated with the serious mouth injury that you suffered on the job on your own.
