A spinal bone bruise can (and should) slow you down

Any type of spinal cord injury, even those that don't appear serious, must be treated in a fast and effective manner. Neglecting to do so increases the risk of additional damage.

A spinal bone bruise, for example, is not nearly as serious as other spinal cord injuries, such as a fracture. However, an immediate diagnosis and implementation of a treatment strategy is a must.

There are three distinct types of spinal bone bruises:

  • Interosseous bruising: A result of excess blood building up below the membrane that covers your spinal bones
  • Subperiosteal hematoma: This happens as a result of swelling and bleeding in the hollow part of the bone
  • Subchondral lesion: This occurs when there is bleeding and swelling between the cartilage and bone

In addition to diagnosing the type of bruise, your medical team will run tests to rule out other injuries, such as a fracture or nerve damage.

Your doctor is likely to recommend one or more of these treatment options:

  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Ice applied to the affected area
  • Temporary use of a back brace
  • Modified activity to give your body time to heal
  • Dietary changes to promote healing

Don't ignore the signs and symptoms of a spinal bone bruise, as neglecting to receive the proper treatment can result in additional trouble and a longer recovery period.

If you suffered your injury on the job, report the incident to your employer and share your medical diagnosis with them. Your medical team may suggest that you take time away from work to heal, which should lead you to file a claim for workers' compensation benefits.
