What can be done to prevent fall injuries?

Data compiled by the National Safety Council (NSC) shows that some 48,060 workers were so seriously injured after suffering a multi-level fall in 2016 that they missed several days of work. Another 697 workers lost their lives in similar types of accidents that year. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that fall-related deaths are the second-leading cause of workplace fatalities. Most of these incidents are completely preventable though.

NSC's data shows that manufacturing, construction, warehouse and transportation workers are at the highest risk of suffering slips and falls on the job. A worker doesn't have to fall from one height to a significantly lower one to get seriously hurt either.

Many common slips and falls occur in places where there's slippery or wet surfaces, inadequate lighting, misplaced cords, cluttered walkways and cracked or uneven pavement. Many of the injuries that result from individuals coming in contact with these hazards are completely preventable if workers only slowed down, avoided distractions from their phones and conversations and cleaned up after themselves.

Workers who fall from higher up often do so while climbing ladders or working on scaffolding. Individuals can reduce their risk of getting hurt by simply being provided with and required to wear adequate fall protection gear. Workers should be given appropriate footwear for the task at hand as well. It can also be helpful for workers to be retrained on how to properly use ladders and all their gear.

Pennsylvania employers can greatly minimize the chances of their workers suffering serious injuries in slip-and-fall incidents if they keep their workspaces tidy and make sure to train workers in and enforce safe working habits. Your attorney here in Dauphin may advise you of your right to request that your employer pay you compensation for your injuries and lost wages if they haven't done an adequate job of clearing hazards and training you in proper safety techniques.
