The following oil rig disasters are among the worst:

Deepwater Horizon

An explosion on board the Deepwater Horizon on April 20, 2010, killed 11 people and caused many injuries. It resulted in the biggest oil spill in U.S. history. Millions of barrels of oil were spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. 

Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, roughly 100,000 legal claims were filed by individuals and businesses affected by the disaster. This included claims for personal injury, wrongful death, and economic losses.

Piper Alpha

On July 6, 1988, multiple explosions caused by a gas leak killed 167 people on the Piper Alpha in the North Sea. Only 61 of the 226 workers survived the oil rig explosion. It took almost three weeks for the fire to be controlled. The Piper Alpha remains the deadliest oil rig disaster in history.

Alexander L Keilland

The Alexander L Keilland was hit by a storm on March 27, 1980, causing 40-foot waves and winds of 45 miles per hour. The storm destroyed one of the support legs, causing the platform to capsize. Rescue efforts were quickly made after the first Mayday call from the oil rig. However, 123 workers out of the 212 workers died before help could arrive.

Seacrest Drillship

The Seacrest drillship capsized in the Gulf of Thailand during Typhoon Gay. Of the 97 crewmembers aboard, only six survived. The cause of the capsize was reportedly the unseaworthiness of the drillship. There was no standby vessel for the Seacrest, as was the custom and practice. 

Bohai 2

The Bohai 2 rig capsized in November 1979 off the coast of China. A storm hit the rig while it was being towed between Korea and China. The storm caused significant damage and flooding to the rig. 72 of the 76 workers onboard were killed in the disaster.
