Law Day 2023
June 2, 2023 | News
Each year during the month of May, our nation celebrates Law Day as a way to educate people of all ages about the American legal system. Pennsylvania has traditionally commemorated Law Day by focusing on educating students about the rule of law.
The Pennsylvania Bar Foundation, Pennsylvania Bar Association, and county bar associations across the commonwealth work with schools each year by organizing visits from judges and lawyers. These visits aim to educate students through discussions about concepts of law, rights, responsibilities of citizenship, and additional legal issues consistent with student interests.
Law Day is a great opportunity to engage with young people and talk about the importance of our Constitution and the rule of law. These are meant to be conversations rather than formal lessons. Nonetheless, they provide a great opportunity to engage with kids and make them think about their community and the real-life, day-to-day ways the Constitution and rule of law show up on a regular basis.
What Is Law Day?
Law Day is held on May 1st throughout the nation to celebrate the law and its importance. It was established in 1958 by President Dwight Eisenhower to mark the nation’s rule of law and codified by Congress in 1961.
Law Day underscores how the law and the legal process contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. It also provides an opportunity to recognize the role of courts in democracy and the importance of jury service in maintaining the integrity of the courts.
Marzzacco Niven & Associates and This Year’s Law Day
The theme of this year’s Law Day, “Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility, and Collaboration,” acknowledges that each of us has a role to play in defending democracy and the guardrails that make it possible.
Marzzacco Niven & Associates was highly involved in this year’s Law Day. Attorney Rebecca Bailey spent time with the 4th graders at Halifax Elementary School.
The students actively participated and afterward, both teachers expressed appreciation. A Halifax Elementary School teacher said, “I have a dynamic group of students this year and it was AMAZING to watch their interest and cooperation in this presentation.”
