What Pennsylvania Cities Have the Most Car Accidents?

Over 110,000 traffic accidents, including harmful, fatal, and property damage-only crashes, occurred in Pennsylvania throughout 2023. Over 66,000 people were hurt in these wrecks, and another 1,209 people were killed by their injuries. Compared to the state’s 2022 numbers, the total number of wrecks and injuries decreased, while the number of traffic deaths increased.

Be that as it may, Pennsylvania is a diverse state, and not every locale within it will face the same challenges and risks on its respective roads and highways. With that in mind, when traveling across the state, one should always be aware of where, exactly, accidents are more likely to happen and adapt their driving behaviors accordingly.

Where Do Most Pennsylvania Accidents Happen?

It is helpful to understand the parts of Pennsylvania that experience the greatest number of car accidents.

Based on available data, the five counties that experienced the greatest number of accidents in 2023 are as follows:

  • Allegheny County: 10,348 accidents
  • Philadelphia County: 8,549 crashes
  • Montgomery County: 7,674 wrecks
  • Lancaster County: 5,573 motor vehicle crashes
  • Bucks County: 5,395 traffic wrecks

Other counties that saw lower (though still notable) numbers of traffic wrecks included Berks (4,711), Lehigh (4,631), Delaware (4,535), Chester (4,141), and Luzerne (3,204).

The Top 5 Deadliest Counties in Pennsylvania

While the total number of car accidents a county experiences can indicate it as a place where you are more likely to be involved in a crash, they may not necessarily be the most dangerous.

When organized according to the counties that recorded the most fatal accidents in 2023, the previous top five list changes in the following manner:

  • Philadelphia County: 128 fatal crashes
  • Allegheny County: 74 fatal wrecks
  • Bucks County: 52 fatal accidents
  • Lancaster County: 49 fatal crashes
  • Berks County: 47 fatal collisions

Though it is true that these counties were also among those that saw the highest number of injury crashes, the vast majority of accidents in any of these resulted in damage to the vehicles involved or other property.

What Causes These Accidents to Occur?

Most car accidents in Pennsylvania (and throughout the country) are avoidable events that come to pass because of one or more drivers’ negligence. Such behaviors can include speeding, driving while intoxicated, distracted driving, and aggressive driving

Refraining from these and similar actions (and giving space to motorists who are doing them) promotes safety. Put away any distractions and ask your passengers to refrain from loud or sudden movements. Follow Pennsylvania’s traffic laws and do not attempt to drive if you feel drowsy, lightheaded, or impaired by any substance.

Remaining Safe in Pennsylvania’s Most Dangerous Counties

Few would be surprised to learn that two of Pennsylvania’s largest cities, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, are also places where a large number of accidents occur. However, they are by no means the only places where fatal and injury accidents happen; large numbers of crashes, including deadly wrecks, can happen in cities of a much smaller size than these metropolises.
