6 Worst Celebrity Car Accidents of All Time

When beloved celebrities are lost in car crashes, the world feels the shock. These larger-than-life figures often seem untouchable—until tragedy strikes. Below are six of the most devastating celebrity car accidents ever recorded, each one leaving fans heartbroken and legacies abruptly cut short.

1. Princess Diana

Princess Diana’s death stunned people around the globe and stands as one of the most heartbreaking celebrity losses in recent memory. Diana, Princess of Wales, was fatally injured in a car crash on August 31, 1997, inside the Alma Tunnel in Paris.

She was riding in a Mercedes-Benz S280 and died immediately, along with her companion, Dodi Fayed. Her chauffeur, Henri Paul, also died in the wreck, and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones was the sole survivor.

Diana was only 36 at the time of the tragedy, which sparked an unprecedented global outpouring of grief. Her funeral was televised worldwide, with an estimated 2.5 billion people watching.

2. Anne Heche

Anne Heche was critically injured when she crashed her Mini Cooper at high speed into two homes in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The second collision caused a massive fire; Heche suffered severe burns and multiple injuries, and firefighters eventually had to extract her from the wreckage. She succumbed to her injuries nine days later (legally declared dead on August 14, 2022) after being taken off life support.

The tragic accident and Heche’s death triggered an extensive discussion about mental health, substance use, and the handling of celebrity crises in the media.

3. Paul Walker

Fast & Furious actor Paul Walker was killed in a high-speed car crash on November 30, 2013. He was a passenger in a friend’s Porsche Carrera GT when the car veered off a suburban street in Valencia and slammed into a light pole and two trees, bursting into flames. Investigators found that the Porsche was traveling roughly 90–94 mph in a 45-mph zone.

Both Walker (40) and the driver, Roger Rodas (38), were killed on impact. Walker’s sudden death during the peak of his career shocked fans worldwide; production on Furious 7 was halted and later resumed, with the film ultimately dedicated to his memory.

4. Grace Kelly

On September 13, 1982, Grace Kelly— once one of Hollywood’s brightest stars and then Princess of Monaco—died when her car veered off a winding road near La Turbie and plunged down a 120-foot cliff. She and her 17-year-old daughter, Princess Stéphanie, were en route to Paris so Stéphanie could start school.

5. Jayne Mansfield

Jayne Mansfield died instantly when the 1966 Buick Electra she was riding in struck the rear of a tractor-trailer on U.S. Highway 90 east of New Orleans.

A mosquito spray machine on the truck created thick fog that obscured the road, and the Electra smashed under the trailer’s rear. Mansfield (34); the driver, Ronald Harrison; and companion, Samuel Brody, were all killed in the crash. Three of Mansfield’s young children in the backseat (including future actress Mariska Hargitay) survived with injuries.

6. James Dean

Actor James Dean was killed at age 24 in an auto collision on September 30, 1955. He was driving his Porsche 550 Spyder on California Route 46 near Cholame when another car (a Ford Tudor) suddenly turned in front of him.

The impact flipped his Spyder; Dean suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital. His passenger, mechanic Rolf Wütherich, survived with severe injuries, and the other driver was only dazed.
