How much does the average person get from Social Security?

The truth about Social Security benefits

Many people with serious injuries and disabilities struggle to secure adequate income from Social Security. At the same time, many politicians rail against "entitlements" like Social Security Disability Insurance, arguing that too many people take advantage of the system for their financial.

So which is it? Is Social Security a thin safety net or a bloated source of entitlements? How much income does the average American really get from Social Security?

Benefits may vary

In July, the Social Security Administration released detailed information about average benefits for all different types of recipients. Among all recipients, the average monthly benefit from Social Security is $1,237.15. That takes into account retired workers, their spouses and children, widows and children of deceased workers, disabled workers, and their dependents.

Among disabled workers specifically, the average Social Security benefit comes in slightly lower at $1,166.41 Spouses of disabled workers can expect about $322.66 and children of disabled workers collect a monthly average of $351.29.

Is it enough?

Social Security is not meant to be an extravagance; it is meant to provide basic needs for eligible people. However, in many cases, $1200 per month is not nearly enough to make ends meet. Particularly if the recipient is responsible for supporting a family, the average benefit award may barely cover basic living expenses. Because of this, it is essential that disabled people do everything possible to maximize their monthly benefits.

How can you get the benefits you need?

The majority of applicants for SSDI have their claims denied the first time around. If this happens to you, don't give up. You have several other options, and abandoning your claim may affect the amount of compensation you are legally entitled to. It is always wise to speak with a lawyer if your claim is denied, or if you have any other questions about your right to SSDI benefits.
