Know why a workers’ compensation claim could be denied

You never want to think about the act of filing a workers' compensation claim, as this means that you have suffered some type of on-the-job injury.

If you find yourself in this position, however, you should know which steps to take. This will put you in the best possible spot for receiving benefits in the near future.

Here are some of the many reasons why a workers' compensation claim could be denied:

  • You did not file a claim in time
  • You did not report the injury to your employer in time
  • Your employer disputes your claim for some reason
  • You suffered a noncompensable injury
  • You did not receive medical treatment immediately following the injury
  • You are unable to prove that you suffered the injury on the job

These are the types of things that you want to avoid if you find yourself in position to file a claim for workers' compensation benefits. If you are able to avoid trouble in these areas, there is a much greater chance of receiving an approval.

In the event that you receive a denial letter, don't give up just yet. Read the letter from start to finish, find out why your claim was denied and then formulate a plan for moving forward.

You may be able to file an appeal with the idea of having your denial overturned. This is not always as challenging as it sounds, as you may simply need to provide more information. In the end, the only thing that matters is that you take the right steps in receiving the compensation you deserve.
