Is surgery necessary after a traumatic brain injury?

There is never a good time to suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI), as this has the potential to change your life in many ways.

Fortunately, there are many ways to treat a traumatic brain injury. This is why it's so important to receive medical care immediately following an accident.

The symptoms of a traumatic brain injury do not always present right away.

Although it's not always the case, there are times when surgery is necessary after a traumatic brain injury. A surgical procedure can be used for all of the following:

  • To repair a skull fracture or to remove a piece of bone that is in the brain
  • To remove a blood clot that is putting pressure on the brain
  • To open a window in the skull, as to relieve pressure and drain any excessive fluid

The only way to know if surgery is the best way to treat a traumatic brain injury is to consult with an experienced medical team. In many cases, if your situation is serious, your doctor will send you to surgery without delay.

If you suffer a traumatic brain injury on the job, such as the result of a heavy object striking you in the head, you'll want to call for immediate help. Due to the extent of your injury, you may not be able to report the accident to your employer.

As you recover, don't wait to learn more about your workers' compensation rights. There is a good chance that you can receive benefits until you feel well enough to return to your position in the future.
